Proposal: Communication System Provides Real-Time Weather Information During Snow and Ice EventsA proposed communication system using a network of weather stations, the Internet and cell phones may solve travel problems during unexpected snow / ice events in some Midwest metropolitan areas. Over the years, better forecasts and communication tools have allowed snow/ice removal crews to respond promptly to predicted snow / ice events. However, sometimes the unanticipated or early arrival of a snow / ice event catches forecasters and road crews off-guard. The proposed communication network provides a method to reduce the surprise element of a snow / ice event. The network provides real-time weather observations / condition information for use by local media weather forecasters, travelers or municipalities responsible for snow / ice removal. The use of the proposed communication system may provide sufficient warning times of 30 – 60 minutes for downwind areas to prepare for the precipitation event. While the proposed system has some limitations, cities with large beltways encircling a metropolitan area could utilize the real-time information to prepare for the onslaught of the snow/ice event. Information on how to set-up the system along with an expected cost estimate is provided using the Cincinnati metropolitan area as a case example. Paper: Do Green Buildings Sell? The purpose of this paper was to determine if Green Building practices are being requested by potential buyers for a local client. Green Buildings are designed for energy efficiency and constructed using environmentally friendly products, however, our study revealed that material selection is often decided after a design is created, an architect hired, and often the design did not factor in "green" components such as the use of natural lighting, energy efficiency and runoff controls. Additionally the materials are often more expensive than traditional building materials. Although the choice and selection of "Green" products are growing, Green Building practices are being requested on a limited basis by the knowledgeable and financially secure. Going forward we see that legislation and economics will drive Green Building and bottom line cost incentives will need to be more broadly marketed. Tom Walsh has been a member of the Fairfield City Environmental Resources and Community Forest Commission since 2003. He has been active in providing environmental resource information to the community, attending monthly board meetings and conducting the annual street tree population census.
EAS recently completed work with the City of Hamilton as the business enterprise for a civil engineering project grant award from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The grant provided funding for the replacement of concrete sidewalks damaged by tree roots. The replacement sidewalks were manufactured using recycled rubber from discarded scrap tires. The use of the replacement rubber sidewalks allowed the mature street trees to remain in place.
